NOT/notとは、

1. 否定の副詞。助動詞の後について、「・・・でない」という意味を表す。n'tと略される場合もある。本稿で記述する。
   1. 転じて「否定」そのものを意味する語句。
   2. 論理回路において論理否定回路（NOT回路）のこと。否定の演算を行う。
2. スペイン領カナリア諸島にあるロケ・デ・ロス・ムチャーチョス天文台の「北欧光学望遠鏡（Nordic Optical Telescope）」のこと。
3. 小惑星帯（メインベルト）に存在する小惑星。2の北欧光学望遠鏡がその名の由来。

notはしばしば助動詞やbe動詞等と結びついて短くされる。

語源

直接には中英語not,natに由来する。これはnoght,nohtの変種で古英語nōht,nāhtにさかのぼれ、意味はnothingといったところ。この二つはそれぞれnōwiht,nāwihtの略。これは古英語におけるnā "no"と名詞 wiht "thing" に由来する。
