shouldとは、英単語の一つである。

古英語のsceolde(shallの過去形)が語源。

概要

主に助動詞(法動詞)として使われ、義務・推量、それにもとづく仮定・可能性などの様々な意味がある。その類似性から、日本では古語の助動詞「べし」と比較されることがある。日本語では「～すべき」と訳されることも多いが、実際は助言から忠告まで幅広い意味合いをもつ。
