504 - Gateway Timeoutとは、ウェブサイト上で発生するエラーメッセージである。
概要
HTTPのステータスコードで、サーバーがゲートウェイやプロキシとして動作している際に、上流のサーバーからリクエストの完了に必要なレスポンスをタイムリーに受け取れなかったことで発生する。
サーバー間のタイムアウトで発生しやすいエラーで、クライアントの機器やインターネット接続に原因がある可能性は低いとされている。原因としては
- サーバーの過負荷
- ネットワークの遅延
- データベースの問題
- アプリケーションの処理遅延
- リソース不足
- 設定の問題
- DNS解決の問題
- ファイアウォールやセキュリティ設定
- ロードバランサーの問題
- サードパーティサービスの遅延
などが挙げられ、単独のエラーを解消しただけでエラー解消に至らない場合がある。
ニコニコ大百科においては、2024年6月4日にニコニコ関連サイトにて「2024年KADOKAWA・ニコニコ動画へのサイバー攻撃」が発生。2024年8月5日にニコニコ大百科がサービス再開された。
しかしサイズが大きい記事の編集しようとする時、あるいはアクセスが重くなっている時に編集か掲示板への投稿を行うと504エラーが発生する場合がある。
504エラーが発生した場合、以下の英文が表示される。
504 ERROR
The request could not be satisfied.

以上の表示がされれば編集も不可能、掲示板へのレスの投稿も反映されるか怪しくなる。
